Do you know of a young reader who prefers graphic novels to conventional books? Are you worried that this may be impeding the development of his literacy skills? As it turns out, reading graphic novels may be beneficial. Authorities in pedagogical research point out, that "with graphic novels, students use text and images to make inferences and synthesize information, both of which are abstract and challenging skills for readers." (Northwestern University Center for Talent Development, 2017)
Scholastic has come up with a list of many benefits, such as "motivating reluctant readers, inference, memory, sequencing, understanding succinct language, and reading comprehension" (English).
The references below will provide more evidence of the value of reading graphic novels.
