Building Your Home Library

Writer's picture: Irena HedrickIrena Hedrick

In our previous blogs, we looked at some indicators of an effect of a home library on a child's literacy. It also turned out, that this library did not have to be huge. Having a home library with 80-350 books correlates with the greatest gains in adult literacy, numeracy and information technology (ICT) skills (Berman, 2018).

When searching for the perfect collection of books for our home library, we sometimes refer to the advice by influential people, take for example Bill Gates. We can also search for the lists of books, as selected by the authorities in the field. One such list for building a home library can be found on the American Library Association's website. In its 2018 update, titles are introduced for children ages 0-3, 4-7, 8-11 and 12-14. (American Library Association, 2019)

This week, we reached out to our school community for recommendations of children's / youth books, specifically for summer reading, and are listing them here.
